The Constructed Image With Claire Rosen

08This advanced workshop covers all of the elements involved in creating conceptual and thematic imagery from idea generation through execution.  It is ideal for photographers who are comfortable with the technical aspects of their equipment and are looking to create staged narrative images.

Students focus on brainstorming, concept development, and the practice of thinking outside the box when approaching visual storytelling.  We cover how to make your picture concept a reality through mood boards, production sheets, pre-production and scheduling; how to source locations, props, and lighting theory; how to cast and work with subjects, as well as problem – solving, communication, and working efficiently on set or on location.

lunaWe start in the classroom with presentations on historical and contemporary photography, breaking down the elements that make a powerful photograph. The idea, mood, composition, technique, lighting, location, model, styling, retouching, etc., are all included, followed by exercises for brainstorming, concept development, and all preproduction tools.  Students then develop their own concepts and create mood boards for an idea that they will pitch in a one on one meeting.

Everyone goes through the pre-production process for their own shoots. Photography teams execute their individual shoot concepts and assist in other student shoots with support from the instructor.  An individual edit is done after the shoot to discuss the selection process and touch on post production notes as necessary.  Each student is allocated a time slot to photograph his/her own concept with a subject, lighting equipment, and assistants from the class.  Students go through this process for 2 different assignments (a conceptual assignment and a fashion assignment). It is a process of learning the creative and technical means by which a photographer can design a momentary reality.

Course Requirements:  Students must feel comfortable using their camera on manual settings and should be familiar with flash equipment.

Claire RosenClaire Rosen is a photographer and video artist blending a fine art sensibility with commercial work to create whimsical imagery inspired by fairy tales, fables, and other children’s stories. Her fashion, fine art and advertising work touch on the bizarre and unusual with the themes of vintage circus, burlesque, magic, curiosities and natural science interwoven throughout the images. Rosen is drawn both to beauty and darkness as it exists in life, and her images explore this duality.

Digital Still Life Photography By Steve Sint

Digital Still Life Photography: Art, Business, & Style by Steve Sint

Sint_StillLifeBkCvr

Steve Sint started using Dynalite flash equipment over 40 years ago with our original D-Series power packs. When we received his newest book Digital Still Life Photography: Art, Business, & Style, we were interested in seeing what he had to say. Physically the book is thick and comprehensive; his conversational writing style makes each topic covered easily understandable.

Although we appreciated images of his Dynalite equipment sprinkled throughout the book, we applaud Steve that he didn’t push any one perticular brand of lighting equipment but was more interested in creating unique lighting solutions making this book ideal for those looking to learn.  He also explained how to build custom studio accessories that repurpose traditional lighting and studio equipment in different ways. Many of them create lighting effects that cannot be duplicated with ready-made products. Not many books show a lot of behind the scenes images letting the reader know in more than words exactly how the image was captured.

Sint_Pliers

Being a professional studio strobe manufacturer, we found his chapter on business great! His breakdown of how many assignment days a year a photographer can work will open many aspiring photographers eyes and his ideas on marketing a photography business should fill them with ideas. Likewise, his point that photographers have to set a salary for themselves when figuring out the cost of doing business was especially important in todays photographic workplace.

This book created quite a stir around Dynalite’s home office. We feel that everyone who reads it, whether an aspiring photographer or an established professional, will find the information on its pages useful, inspiring, and ultimately refreshing to read. Congratulations on another fine book Steve!

Introducing the MH2065v Flash Head

Introducing the NEW MH2065V Flash Head that can also be used for video with its 300 watt modeling lamp (650 watt modeling lamp optional) and its low noise fan to help keep it cool and give longer life!

Similar to our previous Road Max series flash heads, the MH2065v is a fan cooled 2000 w/s flash head.  With a built-in 120˚ reflector and a 18′ detachable heavy duty cable you maintain all the standards set by previous generations of strobe heads.

Weighing in at 2lbs and a diameter of only 5.125″ makes the MH2065V head seem visually similar to the MH2050, but with a standard 300 watt modeling lamp (and optional 650 watt modeling lamp available) in a protective glass cover, this head is far from what Dynalite has done in the past.

With the standard 300 watt modeling lamp and the improved fan-cooled design, Dynalite photographers can now utilize the MH2065V to capture video with there strobe lighting systems!  Below you will see an example of both the images and video quality the MH2065V is capable of.  All material is © Vincent Ricardel
