Peter Read Miller’s Sports Photography Workshop West

This is the eleventh year that Peter Read Miller has held his Sports Photography Workshop in Denver, CO. The workshop will run from the evening of April 8, 2013 through Sunday afternoon April 14, 2013. The workshop will meet at the studio of one of Denver’s top commercial photographers in the Highlands area of Denver, while shoots will take place all over the Denver area and the Front Range.  The the workshop is limited to 30 students and they will have the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of sports and sporting events. In the past these have included mountain biking, lacrosse, fencing, boxing, basketball (including setting up strobes to light a high school gym), baseball, college football (CU spring scrimmage) and track and field. In addition to action photography, the workshop covers portrait lighting with strobes, both in the studio and on location, arena lighting and the set-up and use of remote cameras. Student work is reviewed and critiqued every morning and each student receives a one on one portfolio review with Peter.

Students will have access to the latest cameras and lenses from Canon as well as lighting gear from Dynalite. In addition we will have a pool of gear for setting up remotes and triggering options including Pocket Wizards. Past students have gone on the shoot for major newspapers and agencies (Getty Images, USA Today Sports Images, the Associated Press) and become NFL team photographers. Many have had their work published in national publications including SI, ESPN The Magazine and The Sporting News.  A student in the 2010 workshop had a photo he shot during the workshop run in the “Leading Off” section of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. Tuition for the six day workshop is $1795.00. This includes all instruction, one on one portfolio reviews with Peter and all model and location fees. Students will be responsible for air and ground transportation as well as hotel accommodations and meals during the week.

The workshop will be in the centrally located studio of one of Denver’s top commercial photographers while shoots will take place all over the Denver area and the Front Range.

Limited to only 25 students students will have the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of sports and sporting events. In the past, these have included mountain biking, lacrosse, fencing, boxing, basketball (including setting up strobes to light a high school gym), baseball, college football (CU spring scrimmage) and track and field. A day is also spent shooting portraits of various athletes in the studio.

In addition to action photography, the workshop covers portrait lighting with strobes, both in the studio and on location, arena lighting and the set-up and use of remote cameras. Student work is reviewed and critiqued every morning and each student receives a one on one portfolio review with Peter.

- Max Morse San Francisco based photographer/videographer. Max’s clients include Reuters, Getty Images, Edelman Public Relations and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED.

- Shawn Cullen San Diego, CA. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED Lighting Technician.
San Diego based veteran of 11 of lighting work for SI and many other top
shooters.

Photo Plus Expo Wrap Up

The 2010 Photo Plus Expo is now in the books and we would like to thank all of our loyal Dynalite users, VIP Photographers, speakers, and new studio strobe enthusiasts for making this years show what it was.  Based on the high traffic in our booth as well as feedback received from our authorized dealers, seminar attendees, and others that the buzz on Dynalite is only growing.

Furthermore we appreciate all of the positive feedback we received regarding our new website which was recently launched.  With so many Dynalite related photographers willing to share their work and knowledge we hope to keep the site both informative, educational, and at times even entertaining.  Updates will be frequent on the website showing our new advertisements, product demonstrations, reviews, and possible new products to come.

Peter Read Miller

Peter Read Miller’s career as a photographer spans the past four decades beginning when he was a student at the University of Southern California (USC). For the past quarter century he has been one of the top staff photographers for Sports Illustrated, where he’s worked since the mid 1970’s, with over 100 covers to his credit.

Peter’s other editorial credits include: Time, Newsweek, Life, People, Money, Playboy, Runner’s World, USA Weekend and The New York Times. Advertising clients include: Nike, adidas, Footlocker, Eastman Kodak, ABC Television, Panasonic, Coca-Cola, Visa, The National Football League Properties and Canon Cameras.

In addition to photographing seven Olympic games and 30 Super Bowls, Peter has shot 14 NBA Finals.  He has covered the Stanley Cup Finals, the World Series, the Kentucky Derby, the NCAA Basketball Final Four, Men’s and Women’s World Cup Soccer Finals and the World Championship of Freestyle Wrestling in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia.

His portrait work of many world famous athletes and sports figures include Muhammad Ali, Joe Montana, Magic Johnson, Ivan Ivankov, Renaldo, John Wooden, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Barry Bonds, John Elway, Gabriella Reece, Shaquille O’Neal and Kathy Ireland.
For the past decade Peter has taught an annual sports photography workshop every spring in Denver, Colorado.  He has also taught at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and Rich Clarkson’s Sports Photography Workshop.

Other speaking engagements have included the Los Angeles Chapter of the Advertising Photographers of America, The Wisconsin News Photographers Association and The Sportsshooter Luau.  He has also lectured at San Jose State, UCLA, the University of Tennessee and the University of Colorado.

Photography started as a hobby for Peter in high school. His interest continued and his talent flourished while a student USC where he shot for the yearbook and school paper, The Daily Trojan. After university and a slight detour into road managing a rock and roll band, Peter returned to USC where he shot for the Athletic Department.  USC’s football success led to his work being published nationally, working for NFL Publications and eventually Sports Illustrated.
