Bobbi Lane: Lighting Essentials: One & Two Light Portraits

bl_1070572In this lively and indispensable workshop, you will learn how to work with Dynalite strobe lights, both as a main and as an accessory. This class will cover the big three of lighting: direction, quality and depth. Bobbi will take you step-by-step using various modifiers, such as umbrellas, softboxes, grids, and reflectors, to explain how to match lighting to your concept or the “look” that you desire. Technical considerations such as how to take accurate meter readings will be discussed and demonstrated. Working with a variety of models, you will gain valuable tips and practice on how to successfully pose your subject for headshots. This workshop, exploring the drama and magic of lighting, will set you on the path of using effective techniques for more dynamic portraits!

Bobbi Lane: Portrait Lighting Techniques: Natural & Flash

A photographer uses the tools of light and luminance in order to capture a certain aspect or essence of their subject. This workshop is designed to provide the photographer with essential lighting techniques, both flash and natural, to create a complex portrait. We will use different types of natural light, learning to modify and manipulate it with the use of reflectors and diffusers to explore how they each contribute to the feeling of the portrait. The use of portable flash, how they work and how to control more than one, will be fully explained and demonstrated. You will have hands-on experience each day working with flash, various modifiers, and a variety of models. Exposure techniques, histograms, and balancing light will all be covered in detail. This dynamic workshop is for photographers of of all levels who seek to make better portraits without a lot of expensive equipment. Introduction To Portraits w/ Bobbi Lane at Maine Media Workshops

Understanding lighting, both in the studio and on location, is a crucial part of creating the desired effect in Portrait Photography. This intensive workshop is for advanced amateurs and new professionals wanting to work more creatively as portrait photographers.

This course covers camera formats (including digital), lenses, films and a variety of strobe equipment and focuses on lighting patterns, quality of light, and lighting ratios. Students learn to incorporate styling, composition and the photographer-subject-client relationships in photographs. They also discover new ways to set up a portrait and establish a comfortable rapport with subject while capturing true character and intimate, revealing moments. Bobbi covers portraiture for commercial, editorial, and corporate clients.

Assignments this week include photographing fellow students, local residents, and models. The emphasis throughout the class is to develop each photographer’s personal vision and portfolio.

Also covered will be an overview of Dynalite strobe products, how they work and the step by step set-up will be fully explained and demonstrated. You will have hands-on experience each day working with the lights and the modifiers: umbrellas, boxes, grids, and bouncing.
